Gateway English Through Stories

My Unforgetable Experience in Bali
By Slamet Riyanto

Last year (tahun lalu), on our holiday (dalam liburan kami),my friends and I went to Bali. Bali was chosen (dipilih) because we thought (anggap) that it was difficult for us to visit (berkunjung) Bali ourselves (kami sendiri). It also would not be cheerful (ramai) if we went there not in a group.

One more important thing (satu hall yang lebih penting) was that my English teacher assigned (menugasi) us to practice mempraktekkan) our English with foreign tourists (turis asing). Each student had to take a picture with the tourist and submit (menyerahkan) the picture to the English teacher.

"It is not easy for me to start speaking (mulai bicara) English with a native speaker (penutur asli) of English", said Santi.

"Me, too. I can not open (membuka) my mouth (mulutku), whereas (padahal) often (sering) get eight or nine for English," Tommy expressed (menyatakan) his feeling (perasaannya).

“Its’ quite different from (cukup berbeda) me. I do not have (tak punya) much difficulty (kesulitan) to speak English with a tourist because I have a lot of practice (banyak latihan) speaking before. “ Hanifah gave an opinion (pendapat). “You can practice your English at Kuta beach later (nanti). We will have more time”(banyak waktu) there, “

Hanifah added (menambahkan). On the way to Kuta beach, all of my friends practiced their English on the bus (diatas bis). They did not make so many mistakes (membuat banyak kesalahan) again and they felt much better (semakin baik).

It was 4 p.m. in the afternoon and we stepped (menginjakkan) our feet (kaki) on Kuta beach. The beach was very clean. The waves were not quite big. The seashore (pantai) was large. On the seashore, there were a lot of tourists lying on (tiduran) the sand (pasir). I had prepared (telah menyiapkan) some questions such as “Hello, How are you?, Where do you come from?, How do you go to Bali? Could I take a picture with you? How long will you stay here? And so on. “What do you think of (apa pendapat Anda tentang) Bali. Especially (terutama) Kuta Beach?,” Hanifah asked a question to a tourist.”

“Well, I think Kuta beach is the most beautiful beach (pantai tercantik) in the world (di dunia) that i have ever visited (yang pernah kukunjungi), “ said Tracy from England (Inggris). “Could I take apicture with me?” Hanifah asked her.

“That’s all rifgt, Tracy said. Meanwhile (sementara itu), I had paracticed mu English under (dibawah) a palm tree (pohon palem). Suddenly there was a tourist approach-ing (mendekati) me.

“What is the time?.” A tourist asked. “Five, Sir,” I replied. Then I asked him. “Excuse me, Sir. Where do you come from ? How do you go to Indonesia and how long will you stay here,” I practiced my questions to the tourist. “Could I take a picture of you with me?,”

I asked him again. “Sure,” he replied. “Thank you, Sir and here is (terimalah) my special gift (hadiah khusus) for you.” “A nice T-shirt from Yogyakarta. Visit Jogja, Sir before leaving Indonesia. Jogja is as beautiful as Bali,” I closed (menutup) my concersation.
